1. System Requirements
------------------------------------------------

Your computer must meet the following system requirements to run this game. The game may not run, or you may experience decreased performance on computers that do not fulfil these requirements.

Minimum Spec.
Operating System: Windows XP / Vista / 7
Processor: 3.4 GHz Intel® Pentium 4 or equivalent processor
Memory: 1 GB System RAM (XP) / 2 GB System RAM (Vista / 7)
Graphics: DirectX 9.0c compliant video card with 256 MB RAM (NVIDIA 7900 or better, ATI X1800 or better)
Sound: DirectX Compatible
Hard Drive: 16 GB free space

Recommended Spec.
Operating System: Windows XP / Vista / 7
Processor: Intel® Core 2 Duo E6400 or equivalent processor
Memory: 2 GB System RAM (XP) / 3 GB System RAM (Vista / 7)
Graphics: DirectX 9.0c compliant video card with 512 MB RAM (NVIDIA 8800 series or better, ATI HD2900 PRO or better)
Sound: DirectX Compatible
Hard Drive: 16 GB free space

Note: The game's performance and/or graphical quality may differ according to your computer's hardware and/or video card. Computers with high-performance hardware will provide the best game performance.

------------------------------------------------
2. Installing This Software
------------------------------------------------

To install the game, insert Aliens vs Predator DVD 1 into your CD/DVD drive.

If you have auto-run enabled on your computer the installation program will automatically open and prompt you to install Aliens vs Predator to your hard drive. If auto-run is not enabled, browse to the DVD in Windows Explorer and double-click on the setup.exe file. Follow the on-screen prompts to install the game and its components to your computer.

Once Steam is installed and the game has completed its installation, you are ready to begin playing. Under Windows XP you should double-click the Steam icon on your desktop or in your Start Menu and double-click the Aliens vs Predator entry in your "My games" tab in Steam. Under Windows Vista / 7 you can directly launch the game by double-clicking on the Aliens vs Predator icon in the Games Explorer window or you can follow the same steps as in Windows XP.

Under Windows Vista / 7 you have the option of using either the DirectX 9 or the DirectX 11 version of Aliens vs Predator. You can use the DX11 version even on DX10 hardware but the additional DX11-specific video options will be disabled. Provided drivers are up to date, any Vista / 7 users with DX10 hardware or better should therefore be able to run the DX11 version. Generally the DX11 version should provide superior performance over the DX9 version.

If necessary you can explicitly launch either the DX9 or DX11 version via the right-click menu in Steam. However, the default launch option should automatically detect which version your computer can support. Please note
that launching via Games Explorer will always use the automatic detection.

The version of DirectX being used by the game will be displayed in the video options menu, just underneath the Aliens vs Predator logo.

4. Troubleshooting Tips
------------------------------------------------

i) Please ensure that you are using the latest driver versions available for your computer, particularly for your graphics and sound cards. You may experience graphical artifacts or instability if you are using earlier drivers.

ii) If you are not achieving acceptable performance you should try adjusting some of the video options downwards. The default settings may not be appropriate for your computer. The single largest performance gain should
come from decreasing the resolution used. Beyond that, turning down the other video options - for example, disabling Ambient Occlusion - will also help. You may need to experiment to find the best trade-off for your computer.

iii) If you wish to play the DX11 version of Aliens vs Predator and use the additional DX11-specific features then you must ensure that your graphics card and graphics card drivers are DX11 compatible. If your graphics card
and drivers are only DX10 compatible then you can still run the DX11 version but you will not be able to use the additional DX11-specific features. It is particularly important that your video card drivers are up to date when
running the DX11 version; users have reported just getting a black screen with the audio continuing in the background when running with out of date drivers.

iv) When playing the DX9 version on computers with relatively low amounts of system RAM, turning down the texture detail setting may improve performance even if you have a good video card.

v) There is a known issue with the light from the Marine flare not working on Nvidia cards if the "low" shadow detail option is selected. This may be addressed in a later Nvidia driver revision but if you experience this issue
then please select a different shadow detail option. Note that turning the shadow detail option up above "low" will decrease performance on lower end video cards so you may need to choose the "off" setting instead.

vi) In the DX11 version you may experience a low framerate for a limited period of time when starting a level or after modifying graphics options. This is more likely to be seen on computers running Windows Vista rather than
Windows 7. Reducing your resolution, AA setting, or texture detail will help to alleviate this issue. This may also be addressed in future driver updates.

vii) If you experience hangs or freezes while playing Aliens vs Predator with an ATI video card, especially if a dialog appears reporting that "ATIKMDAG has stopped responding but was successfully recovered" then please see KB article 737-27116 on the AMD support website for solutions. Additionally, some users with certain ATI cards have reported this issue occurring when using the 9.12 or 10.1 Catalyst drivers, possibly in conjunction with
CrossFire. ATI have addressed this problem in the 10.3 drivers so please upgrade to those once available. There may be a hotfix update to earlier drivers prior to the release of 10.3. Alternatively you can downgrade to the
9.11 drivers.

viii) If you experience graphical artifacts such as random polygons or colours being drawn on the screen while playing Aliens vs Predator, please check that your video card is not overheating. You should also check that your video card drivers are up to date. Some users have reported that this issue can be caused by a corrupt video card driver installation. This can be corrected by uninstalling old drivers and optionally using a 3rd party utility such as Driver Sweeper, then installing the latest available drivers.

ix) If you find that the Predator vision modes are not correctly highlighting enemies of the relevant species then please check that you are not forcing anti-aliasing on via your video card drivers. This primarily affects Nvidia video cards when running the DX9 version of Aliens vs Predator. This issue may be addressed in a future driver release.

x) Currently in the DX11 version the gamma video option is not compatible with Nvidia video cards. You should leave the gamma at its default setting (0.5) in these circumstances. This may be addressed in a future driver
release.

xi) Users have reported that on certain sound hardware, primarily Sound Blaster X-Fi cards and onboard Realtek audio chipsets, that audio may be missing or corrupted. This issue should be largely addressed in the latest
Aliens vs Predator update. However, you may still experience occasional missing audio and you may be able to address this by ensuring your audio drivers are fully up to date or by turning off Sound Blaster enhancements if
that option is available. For example, on Windows Vista / 7 you may be able do this by going to Control Panel -> Sound -> Playback -> [active playback device] -> Properties -> Sound Blaster and ticking the Disable Enhancements box, then clicking Ok. The active playback device will depend on your setup but will probably be called Speakers or Headphones. You may find this option elsewhere, depending on your OS or drivers.

xii) Users with multiple video cards in an ATI CrossFire or Nvidia SLI setup may find that their framerate will improve if they disable the Reduce Mouse Lag option in the Controls menu. Note that this may introduce greater latency on the mouse input and this option should left enabled unless necessary. This issue may be addressed in future driver releases.

xiii) At the time of writing, Steam does not currently support the Players list in conjunction with player lobbies. Your list of players that you've recently played with, etc., will not be populated with players from Aliens vs
Predator until Steam is updated to support this.

xiv) Users with Nvidia video cards and certain driver / operating system combinations may find that if they use the DX11 version and have both the V-Sync and Reduce Mouse Lag options enabled that the game will hang on the loading screen when starting a level. You can workaround this by disabling one of those options or by using the DX9 version instead. This issue may be addressed in a future driver release or Aliens vs Predator patch.

xv) Users with Nvidia video cards and certain driver / operating system combinations may find that in the DX11 version they experience "stuttering" during gameplay, perhaps particularly when moving into new areas of a single-player level. You may be able to improve this by reducing your texture detail setting, by disabling one or both of the options described in the previous point (xiv), or by running the DX9 version instead. This issue may be addressed in a future driver release.
