V. BENCHMARK PERFORMANCE GUIDE
__________________________________________________ ____________________

This section covers the performance benchmarking built into the PC
version of Stormrise. Benchmarking is performed on slightly modified
game levels and should be considered indicative of gameplay. The
benchmarking process is driven though the config file and command line
parameters.

---------------------
Using the Config File
---------------------

When executing the Game, you can tell the game to use a specific
config file by passing it on the command line with an "@" symbol
preceeding the file name. e.g. "Stormrise.exe @user.cfg" will execute
the game and use the "user.cfg" file. When benchmarking, video options
can only be set from the config file and command line parameters.

------------------
Config file format
------------------

The config file is broken up into sections with each section
containing a number of elements. No individual element is mandatory,
as the elements are only used to override the in-game options.

An example of the contents of a config are as follows:

[benchmark]
enableBenchmark = true
outputAllFrames = false
outputFilename = c:\benchmark.txt
mission = $mn_sp05

[video]
width=1920
height=1200
samples=8
aspect=2
enable10_1=true
shadowquality=2
fxquality=2
modelquality=2
texturequality=2
vsync=0

----------------------
Commandline Parameters
----------------------

All the options in the config file can be supplied on the command
line. To supply an option on the command line, you use a double
dash "--" followed by the group, option name and value. Eg: To launch

the game with 8 samples set for MSAA you would use "Stormrise.exe
--video.samples=8"

If you intend to run a command line parameter and a config file you
need to place the conig file at the end of the command e.g.
"Stormrise.exe --video.samples=8 @user.cfg"

-----------------
Benchmark Section
-----------------

This section controls whether or not benchmarking is being performed
and controls how the benchmarking is performed.

"enableBenchmark" -- Control whether or not benchmarking is being
performed

"outputAllFrames" -- Determines if the instantaneous frame rate is
written to file every frame. (results in a much larger output file)

"outputFilename" -- Declares the output file for the benchmark data.
If none is supplied, or the file cannot be opened for writing, it
will default to "Stormrise_benchmark.txt" in the
"%USERPROFILE%" directory (normally c:\Users\username)

"mission" -- Controls the mission used for benchmarking. If a mission
is selected which isn't set up for benchmarking, then the Game will
quit automatically once the level has been loaded. Currently
the only mission available for benchmarking is "$mn_sp05"

-------------
Video Section
-------------

This section controls the video configuration. In benchmark mode
there is no profile signed in, so these options need to be used to
control how the benchmark is run.

"width" -- The horizontal resolution to set for video output (valid
values depend on the video card)

"height" -- The vertical resolution to set for video output (valid
values depend on the video card)

"samples" -- The number of samples to use for MSAA (valid values
depend on the video card)

"enable10_1" -- Controls whether or not the Game is allowed to run
is DirectX 10.1 mode. This setting only applies to DirectX 10.1
hardware as DirectX 10.0 hardware will always run in DirectX 10.0
mode.

"shadowquality" -- Controls Shadow Quality : 0 = Low; 1 = Medium;
2 = High;

"fxquality" -- Controls the FX Quality in game: 0 = Low; 1 = Medium;
2 = High;

"texturequality" -- Controls the maximum texture quality in game:
0 = Low; 1 = Medium; 2 = High;

"vsync" -- Controls syncing to the vertical refresh. 1 = sync to
refresh; 0 = don't sync to refresh. Vsync is always disabled in
benchmark mode.

"aspect" -- constrols aspect ratio, 0 = 4:3, 1 = 16:9, 2 = 16:10

----------------------
Performing a benchmark
----------------------

To perform a benchmark, the "enableBenchmark" option must be set
(either by config file or command line). Additionally, a valid
benchmark "mission" must be set as well. If an invalid mission is
selected (or no mission is selected) then the Game will terminate
without performing a benchmark. Once the benchmark is complete, the
benchmark results will be saved into the file specified in the config
(or into "Stormrise_benchmark.txt" in the %USERPROFILE% directory if
no outputFilename was specified). The file will contain the video
options used for benchmark run, the time the benchmark was started and
the benchmark results (Min, Max and Avg frame rates - and possibly the
instantaneous frames rates throughout the benchmark). The output file
will be overridden each time a benchmark is run, so it's advisable
that you use the data before running another benchmark or change the
outputFilename.

When running in benchmark mode, no profile is signed in by default
(and hence no profile related video settings are loaded). To control
video options, you will need to use the config file and/or command
line options.

Attempting to change profiles (or log into a profile) during
benchmarking will result in termination of the benchmark.
