Installing Jade Empire
----------------------
To install Jade Empire just insert the Jade Empire DVD
into your DVD drive and follow the on-screen prompts to install the game.
If the AutoPlay screen does not automatically appear after inserting
the Jade Empire DVD into your DVD drive,
follow these steps:
1. Close all running programs.
2. Ensure that the Jade Empire DVD is in your DVD drive.
3. Double-click My Computer on your desktop.
4. Double-click the DVD icon.
5. Double-click on the Setup.exe icon to launch the installer.
6. Follow the on-screen instructions to install the game.
After installing the game, you will be offered the choice to view the readme
or play the game. The readme is a text file, (this one) which lists additions to the
manual since printing.
Optimizing Gameplay
-------------------
The installer automatically detects the type of system you have and
configures your option settings for optimal gameplay when you first install.
You can adjust the option settings later but if you turn up your
options this may cause slowdowns in gameplay if you are running
on less than a recommended system (see above under System Requirements).
Defragging your hard drive makes saving the game much faster - we recommend you
defrag your hard drive prior to installing and occasionally between
play sessions.
If you are experiencing slowdowns or poor performance, we recommend that
you try turning down Options settings such as:
-Turn off all the video options such as Anti-aliasing, Soft Shadows, Bloom Lighting, Focus Trails, etc.
-Reduce the resolution to a setting below that of your desktop.
If you have many programs running in the background, this can also cause Jade Empire PC to slow down as CPU power is being used by other programs.
it is recommended that all non-essential programs are exited before running Jade Empire.
A recommended system will be able to play the game with most of
the advanced options turned on while a minimum spec system may require
some of these options to be turned off.
If when running the game you encounter severe graphical corruption, this may be solvable by disabling vertex compression. This can be done by editing the JadeEmpire.ini file in a text editor. Under the [Render] section will be a line that says:
VertexOpt=1
Change the 1 to a 0 (zero) to disable vertex compression and try running the game again.
Manual Errata
-------------
This section includes any changes that were made to Jade Empire that did not make it into the game manual in time for printing.
In the credits the 2K Games QA tester should be spelled Dimitri Becerra, not Dimitri Beccera.
Instruction Manual
------------------
Included on this product's game disc is an electronic version of the game's
Instruction Manual in .pdf format, Adobe Acrobat Reader 7.0 (which enables
you to view the manual in .pdf format), and an Install Guide file explaining
how to access and use these features. Please refer to the Install Guide file
located on the root of the DVD, and in the Jade Empire root directory if installed.
Game Known Issues
-----------------
This section documents known issues with Jade Empire PC:
- Jade Empire will allow players with ATI cards to set the game to widescreen. This is not recommended unless you have a widescreen monitor.
- There may be some graphical corruption with some ATI cards when Anti-Aliasing is turned on.
- Programs that change program focus, such as Microsoft Instant Messenger, can cause the game to minimize. In some places like movies, loading screens, and the mini-game flyer mission, this can cause problems. If you experience such problems, save the game, and restart Jade Empire PC.
- On minimum requirement systems the frame-rate may drop in areas with many opponents, using magic, while the user is in focus mode. If this occurs, turning the resolution down may fix the problem.
- Very rarely the camera may point straight down. Saving and loading your game should resolve this (you may have to try this more then once).
- Controller Issues:
(the following issue may occur during the opening tutorial):
If you have a controller plugged into your system but you are playing Jade Empire PC with your keyboard and mouse it is possible for you to see prompts for your controller instead of for the keyboard and mouse. This is because some controllers, Logitech Wingman is an example, can be constantly sending input to the game on one of it's slider or analog controls and this can trick the game into thinking you are using that controller. If you center all controls this issue may go away. The best solution is to only have the controller plugged in if you are planning to play the game using it.
- commands bound to toggle buttons or switches on gamepads may cause conflicts with keyboard commands. If you run into this rebind the command from that button or swtich.

THE SOFTWARE UTILITIES.
If the Software contains a level editor or other similar type tools or utilities (collectively, the “Software Utilities”) that permit you to construct or customize new game levels and other related game elements in connection with your personal use of the Software (“Customized Game Materials”) then the use of the Software Utilities is subject to the following additional terms, conditions and restrictions:

If for any reason you find a defect in the storage medium during the warranty period, and provided LICENSOR is able to replicate and verify that such defective condition exists, LICENSOR agrees to replace, free of charge, any storage medium (including the Software contained therein) discovered to be defective within the warranty period as long as the Software is then-currently in LICENSOR’s inventory or scheduled to be manufactured by or for LICENSOR. If the Software is no longer available, LICENSOR retains the right to substitute a similar program of equal or greater value. This warranty is limited to the storage medium containing the Software as originally provided by LICENSOR and is not applicable to normal wear and tear. This warranty shall not be applicable and shall be void if the defect has arisen through abuse, mistreatment, or neglect, or any other cause unrelated to defective materials or workmanship. Any implied warranties prescribed by statute and that are not effectively disclaimed hereunder are expressly limited to the 90-day period described above.
Except as set forth above, this warranty is in lieu of all other warranties, whether oral or written, express or implied, including any implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose or non-infringement, and LICENSOR expressly disclaims all other warranties with respect to the Software and any services furnished in connection with this Agreement, and no other representations or warranties of any kind shall be binding on LICENSOR. LICENSOR shall not be liable for any loss or damage as a consequence of or arising out of the interruption or loss of use of the Software or any other items or services provided by LICENSOR hereunder.
When returning any defective media that contains the Software in accordance with the limited warranty set forth above, please only send the defective media to LICENSOR’s address as specified below and please include the following: your name and return address; a photocopy of your dated sales receipt; and a brief note describing the defect and the system on which you attempted to install and run the Software.

SOME STATES/COUNTRIES DO NOT ALLOW LIMITATIONS ON HOW LONG AN IMPLIED WARRANTY LASTS AND/OR THE EXCLUSION OR LIMITATION OF INCIDENTAL OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES, SO THE ABOVE LIMITATIONS AND/OR EXCLUSION OR LIMITATION OF LIABILITY MAY NOT APPLY TO YOU. THIS WARRANTY GIVES YOU SPECIFIC LEGAL RIGHTS, AND YOU MAY HAVE OTHER RIGHTS THAT VARY FROM JURISDICTION TO JURISDICTION.
